How we use AI

AI principles

Every Oxonia product is Ai enabled. These principles shape how that AI behaves, in every product, for every university.

1. People approve official records

AI can draft. People decide. Anything that becomes an official record waits for a named person to approve it. That includes marks in Oxonia Mark, minutes in Oxonia Senate, policies in Oxonia Policy and regulator returns in Oxonia Nexus.

No setting turns this off. See How AI drafts are approved.

2. Answers cite their sources

An answer without a source is hard to trust and hard to check. So Oxonia shows where each answer came from:

  • Lecture summaries cite the minute of the recording.
  • Library answers cite the document and page.
  • Marks quote the exact words in the script that earned them.
  • The Compass weekly brief has a source for every line.
  • AI Hub answers about the university's rules quote the clause.

See Citations and sources.

3. Show the uncertainty

AI is not always sure, and it should say so. In Oxonia Mark, each mark comes with a confidence score. Uncertain, illegible, borderline and flagged scripts go to a review queue for people to check. Only the hard scripts reach people, but every hard script does.

4. The university's own knowledge first

Oxonia works from the university's own material wherever it can: its lectures, its rubrics, its theses and past papers, its regulations and its minutes. Oxonia Library answers from the university's own collections. Oxonia Tutor quotes the readings the lecturer set. Oxonia Senate's Ask Senate searches the university's own past decisions.

5. Fair to every student

Students should not be disadvantaged by language, disability or where they study. Live captions in Scribe and tutorials in Tutor work in many languages, including Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Arabic, French and Portuguese, and tutorials run at a natural pace. Students see why each mark was given, and appeals and re-marks are tracked. See Accessibility statement.

6. Governed by the university

Each university decides how AI is used in its teaching and assessment. Oxonia Policy helps it write and approve an AI policy through Senate, keep a register of every AI tool, set levels of allowed AI use for each module and collect student declarations. Oxonia AI Hub teaches students to use AI well and answers questions about the rules with the clause.

Universities can use Oxonia's shared AI credits or their own AI keys. See Bring your own AI keys.

7. Open about what AI did

People should know when they are reading something AI drafted. Drafts are marked as drafts until approved. Sam, the fellow student in Oxonia Tutor, is presented as part of the tutorial, not as a real classmate. Reports quote the tutorial itself, so students can see what the feedback is based on.
