Open standard

LTI 1.3

LTI 1.3 is the open standard learning platforms use to add tools safely. Oxonia uses it to sit inside the courses your university already runs.

What LTI 1.3 is

LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability. It is an open standard that lets a learning platform, such as Moodle, Canvas or Blackboard, launch an outside tool and share course information with it.

Version 1.3 is the current version. It is designed to make these connections more secure than earlier versions.

What Oxonia uses it for

  • Rosters. The students and staff on each course sync to Oxonia.
  • Links. Oxonia products open from inside the course.
  • Study packs. Oxonia Scribe study packs sync to the course after each lecture.

Why a standard matters

Because LTI 1.3 is a standard, the university is not tied to one learning platform. If a faculty moves from one platform to another, Oxonia can connect to the new one in the same way.

It also means the university's IT team can review the connection using guidance they already know.

Which products use it

Oxonia Scribe is the product that uses LTI, for lecture capture and study packs. Rosters, links and study packs sync to each course. See Oxonia Teach.

Sign-in alongside LTI

LTI decides how Oxonia opens inside a course. The Oxonia Academy ID decides who the person is, using the university's Microsoft, Google or SAML and Shibboleth sign-in. The two work together so that students never need another password.

Getting connected

An admin sets up the LTI connection in the university admin console and in the learning platform. If you have questions about your platform or version, book a demo and bring your learning technologist.

Common questions

Do we need LTI to use Oxonia? No. Lecturers and students can use Oxonia directly through the app launcher. LTI makes it easier by putting Oxonia inside the course.

Is the connection secure? LTI 1.3 is designed for secure launches between systems. See the security overview for how Oxonia protects data.

Who sets it up? Usually your learning technologist and an Oxonia admin, together with our onboarding team.
